Chennai's MRTS, Madras Rapid Transit System, was conceived way back in 1984, the first phase of the project between Beach Station and Mylapore Station was completed in 1997.

Madras Rapid Transit System (MRTS) is a partially elevated double track suburban railway in Chennai (Madras) which is an extension of the broad gauge line from Madras Beach. Beach station serves both the existing suburban BG lines and the MRTS. The MRTS line from Beach currently follows the Buckingham canal and goes to Thirumayilai (Mylapore), a distance of 8.97km.

MRTS Train appears every 10 minutes during the peak hours (8 a.m. - 10.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.) and at about 20 minutes frequency during the rest of the day.

The MRTS line is currently being extended further south to Velacheri (10.8km) in the second phase of the project Mandaveli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram, Kasturibai Nagar, Indira Nagar,and Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani I, Taramani II, and Velachery.

It is expected that in the third phase it will be extended to St. Thomas Mount.
