Adyar Creek - Chennai
Adyar Creek is geographically located at latitude 13° 0' 50" North of the Equator and longitude 80° 15' 50" East of the Prime Meridian on the Map of India. Chennai is one of the few cities having an estuarine ecosystem. The Adyar creek is of a tidal type and a part of the natural estuarine ecosystem located right in the heart of the city. At the estuary there is vegetation and nesting of migratory birds. The Adyar creek branches off from the estuary and also supports vegetation and bird life. The Creek has good bio-diversity with more than 70 species of flora, supporting a rich variety of insects and birds, crabs and fish. Once, 200 species of migratory birds visited the creek and quite a number of them still come. The Adyar river, of which the creek is a part, is highly polluted.
